Lili Reinhart is set to star in and executive produce the upcoming romantic comedy The Love Hypothesis, a film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, for Amazon MGM Studios and MRC. Reinhart, whose recent performance in the acclaimed series Hal & Harper earned her the Series Mania Best Actress Award, continues to build on her rising career with this high-profile project.
The Love Hypothesis centers around Olive Smith, a biology PhD candidate, and Dr. Adam Carlsen, a charismatic yet notoriously tyrannical professor. The story follows their decision to enter into a fake relationship, a strategic move that quickly spirals into chaos as their carefully crafted theories about love are challenged and ultimately transformed. Based on Hazelwood’s novel—published by Berkley, an imprint of Penguin Random House—the book enjoyed an impressive ten months on the New York Times bestseller list and was named the Best Romance of the Year by Amazon. The novel’s international success saw it break out in 40 countries, solidifying its status as a beloved romantic comedy.

Lili will bring Olive to life on the big screen, while Tom Bateman, known for his role in Murder on the Orient Express, has been cast as Dr. Adam Carlsen. His addition to the project promises to add a compelling dynamic to the story, pairing well with Reinhart’s portrayal of Olive. The film will be directed by Claire Scanlon, whose previous work includes the hit Set It Up, from a script by Sarah Rothschild. Elizabeth Cantillon, whose credits include The Girl in the Spider’s Web and Charlie’s Angels, is producing, alongside Reinhart, Hagedorn, and Hazelwood, who also serves as an executive producer.
Hazelwood expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Honestly, I still can’t believe this is happening. I have complete trust in this brilliant team—Claire Scanlon, Elizabeth Cantillon, and Lili Reinhart—and I cannot wait to see the final product. I hope they have as much fun filming as I had while writing the book.” The adaptation aims to capture the humor and heart of the original novel, blending romantic comedy with genuine emotional depth.

Reinhart’s recent and upcoming projects highlight her versatility and rising prominence in the industry. She will soon be seen starring opposite Cooper Raiff and Mark Ruffalo in Hal & Harper, a series she produced that premiered at Sundance and was acquired by MUBI. Additionally, she recently wrapped filming on Uta Briesewitz’s American Sweatshop, which premiered at SXSW, and on Brian Swibel’s directorial debut The Very Best People, as well as Meredith Alloway’s Forbidden Fruits, scheduled for release by IFC Films in 2026. Reinhart is also attached to produce and star in Fake Wedding, a project in development at Amazon MGM under her production company, Small Victory. She is represented by Anonymous Content, UTA, and Peikoff Mahan.

With her evolving career and this new project, Reinhart continues to demonstrate her talent and her ability to take on diverse roles, both in front of and behind the camera. The Love Hypothesis promises to be a lively, heartfelt romantic comedy that fans of the genre will look forward to, as it explores themes of love, chaos, and unexpected connections.
