In Theatres, The #1 Movie Right Now

"Superman," the highly anticipated 2025 American superhero film, marks a bold new chapter for DC Comics’ iconic hero and the broader DC Universe (DCU). Crafted under the visionary direction and writing of James Gunn, this film not only rebooted the Superman saga but also introduced the first installment of the DCU’s Chapter One: "Gods and Monsters." With a star-studded cast led by David Corenswet, "Superman" promises a fresh, compelling take on the legendary character, blending classic elements with innovative storytelling.

Set against the backdrop of a world skeptical of its greatest protector, "Superman" explores the hero’s journey from the peaceful Kansas upbringing to the tumult of global politics and personal identity. Corenswet stars as Clark Kent / Superman, a Kryptonian survivor raised by human parents Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville. Gunn describes Corenswet’s Superman as a 25-year-old emerging hero—more seasoned than the youthful Clark of "Smallville" but younger than Henry Cavill’s portrayal in the DCEU. Corenswet’s Superman embodies “truth, justice, and the American way,” infused with kindness and a desire to lead with authority, inspired by Grant Morrison’s "All-Star Superman" and Christopher Reeve’s iconic portrayal.

The film features a stellar ensemble including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, a fiercely intelligent and feisty journalist who is both Clark’s colleague and love interest, bringing a modern, dynamic edge to the character. Nicholas Hoult takes on the role of Lex Luthor, a relentless, genius billionaire driven by a complex obsession with power and recognition, channeling inspiration from Michael Rosenbaum’s "Smallville" Lex and billionaire Steve Jobs to craft a credible and menacing adversary. Edi Gathegi plays Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific, an inventor and superhero motivated by justice after personal tragedy, wielding high-tech gadgets. Anthony Carrigan’s Rex Mason, or Metamorpho, is an archaeologist with the power to transmute elements, portrayed with authenticity and a touch of humor. Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, a fearless, overconfident Green Lantern, injects both comic relief and strength, while Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, reincarnated with wings and melee weapons, navigates trauma with wit and self-awareness.

Supporting characters include Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher—Luthor’s assistant and secret lover—and Wendell Pierce as Perry White, the gruff but dedicated Daily Planet editor-in-chief. The cast expands with roles like María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, a nanotech-powered ally of Luthor, and Zlatko Burić as Boravia’s President, Ghurkos. Cameos feature notable names including Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., John Cena as Peacemaker, and Gunn’s brother Sean as Maxwell Lord, weaving a rich tapestry of interconnected characters and storylines.

Filming took place mainly at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, with scenic shoots in Norway’s Svalbard, capturing icy terrains that echo Krypton’s desolation. Production wrapped in July 2024, with visual effects bringing to life Krypto, Superman’s loyal dog, modeled after Gunn’s own Ozu. The story draws inspiration from a variety of sources, most notably Grant Morrison’s "All-Star Superman," blending timeless heroism with contemporary themes of perception, truth, and identity. The narrative begins with Superman’s heroic intervention in a conflict involving Boravia and Jarhanpur, setting the stage for a deeper exploration of his place in the world. As the story unfolds, Superman faces a propaganda campaign led by Lex Luthor, who manipulates public opinion through Ultraman—a clone of Superman controlled remotely—leading to intense battles involving black holes and kaiju-like monsters.

A major twist reveals Superman’s own Kryptonian parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, urging him in a recorded message to conquer Earth and restore Kryptonian dominance—a shocking revelation that tests his moral compass. As he fights to clear his name, he confronts external enemies and internal doubts, embodying the universal hero’s struggle for self-acceptance. Critics responded positively to "Superman," praising its blend of classic heroism and modern storytelling, and has grossed $217 million so far! The film’s reception sets the stage for future installments in the DCU, promising a universe that explores gods, monsters, and moral complexities with depth and nuance.

Ultimately, "Superman" (2025) is not just a reboot but a reinvention of one of the most enduring icons in comic book history. With a talented cast, innovative storytelling, and stunning visuals, James Gunn’s film offers a compelling look at what it means to be a hero in a world filled with doubt and deception. It marks a significant step forward for the DC Universe, heralding the birth of a new era rooted in hope, resilience, and the timeless pursuit of truth. For those eager to see the dawn of this new hero’s journey, "Superman" stands as a testament to the enduring legacy and limitless potential of the Man of Steel. "Superman" premiered at the TCL Chinese Theater on July 7, 2025, and was released theatrically by Warner Bros. Pictures internationally on July 9, and in the United States and China on July 11, in IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, ScreenX, and 4DX.
